UNICEF Afghanistan mourns the death of Hamida Barmaki

On behalf of all UNICEF staff in Afghanistan, UNICEF Representative Peter Crowley expresses deep shock at the tragic death of Mrs Hamida Barmaki who was killed with her husband and four children, on Friday 28 January 2011 in the suicide attack on the Finest supermarket in Kabul.
Mrs Hamida Barmaki, Child Rights Commissioner of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC), had a distinguished career in the promotion of Human Rights in Afghanistan. She was a close partner and critical ally of UNICEF Afghanistan in promoting and advocating for child rights in the Country. Her death is a great loss to the Child Rights Unit of the AIHRC.
UNICEF calls on all parties to the conflict to immediately cease attacks against civilian targets which too often impact on the lives and well being of children in Afghanistan
UNICEF expresses its heartfelt condolences to Mrs Barmaki’s family, and to the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission.
